Changing Your Pet’s Name

Have you ever changed your pet’s name? It seems to be easier to do when they come to you with a name you don’t like, though over time it may become clear that a name you’ve given doesn’t suit them either.

When we adopted Kricket we changed her name from “Mugsy.” It was obviously one given to her by the Humane Society so chances were she didn’t have it for long anyway, and I think it’s safe to say cats don’t care what you call them in the first place!

We played with the idea of changing Honey’s name when we adopted her because it’s not really our style, but the name fit her so well (she really is a big love) that it grew on us.

Have you changed a pet’s name before?

When we adopted Ernie the Humane Society had named him “Memphis”. Needless to say, that name was gone gone gone when we brought him home

Ernie suits him much better, I think. His sister Cleo had a strange name too, I can’t remember it though.

When I was with my ex we adopted a cat that had been dubbed “Mr. Friendly”. Weird people, I tell you.

When we adopted our boxer Bailey she was 3 years old, I’m sure she had a name before that but we’re not sure what it was. She took to the name very quickly, that or she thought her name was “no”, either way she responded and we found out very fast why she was put up for adoption in the first place, what with all the fence jumping and home destroying. She was still a sweetheart and quickly became part of the family, sadly her last fence jump was truly her last as she was struck and killed by a car in front of our house.

That is the cutest damn thing I have ever seen hahaha!

I adopted my baby in Dec. of ‘01. His owner/breeder had named him “Black Bear” becuase well he looked like a little black bear. But I didn’t really like it. I spent weeks trying to come up with something else. I was playing with him outside one day, he looked up at me with his HUGE blue eyes and I got it right then and there. “Blu”. Althought he comes to “boobers” and “Boo Boo” also =)
