Feedback Friday: Do You Crate Your Dogs?

What do you do with your dog(s) when you leave the house (I don’t mean on vacation, but just for a few hours to errands or go out to dinner, etc.) or at night?

We crate Chip and Honey when we’re going to be gone longer than about an hour. When Chip was a puppy he had some potty issues if we were gone longer and we found that he was able to hold it when we put him in his little crate. Honey had potty issues when we adopted her (as an adult) but also refuses to mess up her crate. They’re the first thing we head for when we get home, though, so maybe they just know we won’t forget them!

We also crate them at night because neither of us wanted them sleeping with us and we don’t want them trotting around the house harassing the cats unsupervised. They both go in willingly after going outside one last time and then we just say “go to bed” and they dash into their little crates and curl up (that’s all I had to do to get Chip into his crate for the above picture, in the middle of the day!).

Both of my dogs has her own crate. One dog is a troublemaker, there is nothing she won’t chew up, so for her own safety (and the safety of my stuff), she is crated if we leave the house for a few minutes, as well as at night to sleep. My other dog doesn’t bother anything, she has us wrapped around her little paw, so she sleeps with us at night, and only goes in her crate at dinner time, or if we leave the house for a while (I sometimes put her in my bedroom, instead of her crate, don’t tell my husband).

Murphy is crated whenever we leave the house because he is too smart for his own good and will get into SOMETHING if he’s not locked up. He sleeps in there on his own, and sometimes we will crate him at night if we need a break from the smallest thing in the house taking up the most bed space.

We tell him “Go to your den!” and he goes right in. I’d rather have fun while I am out, knowing he is safe and sound in his den, rather than worry about what he’s getting into when we’re not there.

    (Hi Chip!)

“the smallest thing in the house taking up the most bed space”

We crate both of our dogs together when we are away, and at night. They used to have two separate crates but Lily our Shih tzu always went in the big crate. I got tired of digging her out to put her in her own crate and gave up.
The border collie (Emily) would eat the house while we were gone, and the little one would help her when she wasn’t climbing up on the table. They only have manners when we’re watching them:)
