Poetic Justice: Michael Vick’s House to Possibly Become An Animal Shelter

Michael Vick’s house became almost as infamous as he did last year when his dogfighting ring and subsequent animal cruelty were discovered. He sold the property in Surry County, Virginia, last May for $450,000 (thought it was appraised at $747,000) and it has since been put up for auction. The real estate developer, however, claims he’s spent an additional $50,000 in repairs after the house was vandalized and is now asking for $1.1 million.
Jalie’s Butterflies, an animal advocacy group, wants to turn the property into an animal shelter for abused dogs. It includes the main house, a basketball court, four outbuildings and a whole lot of dog cages. The main house has two master suites, a media room and a two-car garage. So far, nearly $13,000 has been raised. If the goal is not reached the house donations will got to the ASPCA.
“The project isn’t a political statement or an attempt to point fingers at those involved in the mistreatment of these defenseless dogs. This is a chance to give back to the spirit of the animals that were harmed. It is a chance for animal lovers to contribute to a noble cause. It is a chance to create a happy final chapter to a sordid and tragic tale.”
Michael Vick is currently serving a 23-month sentence for the dogfighting conspiracy. The suspended Atlanta Falcons quarterback and three co-defendants raised and trained pit bulls for fighting in the area behind the house. Several dogs that did not perform well in test fights were executed.
