Popular Pet Urban Legends

A new pet hoax surfaced over the weekend about a site called puppyprofits.com, claiming to be “an incredible opportunity to make insane profits with your own canine sportfighting club.”
The site is pretty extensive and unlike many other pet and animal hoaxes it’s understandable how people could be fooled by it. Snopes.com, however, says it’s a no go.
This got me to thinking of other internet pet hoaxes over the years, though. Anyone remember bonsai kittens and the outrage it sparked among the highly gullible? Or Save Toby, the rabbit on the brink of being eaten by its owner if he didn’t raise $50,000? What about the dumb carpet layer and the missing family pet?
There are also the ones that have hung around for a long time, such as how it’s really not harmful to throw rice over newly-wed couples, the Swiffer Wet Jet is not toxic to pets (and the equally panic-inducing use of Febreze).
What other pet myths and hoaxes have you heard or run into over the years?
