The Pets of Chez Foodbowl, part 2
Now for the rest:

This is Chip as a puppy. He’s a chihuahua we adopted in October 2002. He was my birthday present that year but we had to wait an extra month for him to be old enough to bring home. He’s a total sweetheart though it takes him a little time to warm up to strangers. He’s an excellent little watch dog.

This is Honey on the day we brought her home in October 2004. Honey had kind of a rocky life right before she came to live with us. She had lived with an elderly owner for the first several years of her life but the owner died. She then went to another elderly owner who also died on her. She was then taken by a friend of the last owner but Honey had developed some issues during that time and had some bathroom troubles. The last owner took her to a vet clinic to be put down because she didn’t want to deal with the bathroom problem.
The vet tech who was working that day asked if she could take Honey instead. She already had three dogs of her own and put Honey up on Petfinder, where we found her. She did have a few accidents with us but has been accident-free for quite a while now. She is an absolute and total sweetheart. She loves meeting people and other pets and she and Chip, after almost three years together, are finally playing and cuddling together, with a lot of work on Honey’s part!

Here they are now on a camping trip we took last month. They weren’t terribly thrilled with the whole experience but hopefully they’ll get used to it!
Chip and Honey are crate trained and eat Natural Balance Dog Food.

Lastly we have Starbuck, the rat. She was purchased with her sister Boomer in February 2005 (yes we’re Battlestar Galactica fans, why do you ask?). Sadly, Boomer passed away only a year later, but Starbuck is still going strong. She’s is the fourth rat out of the four we’ve ever owned (the first two, Dot and Dash, both lived good lives before we brought home Starbuck and Boomer).
People often recoil a little when they learn you have a pet rat, but rats would be the first small animal I’d recommend to anyone, way above gerbils and hamsters. They’re social, cuddly and affectionate, and damn smart. Did you know you could train them to come to you when you call their name? Starbuck (and all the others before her) lives on the homemade diet found at Sue Bee’s Rat Diet.
