Weird Pets: Ernie

Heather asked us how weird our pets were, and I immediately thought of my cat, Ernie.

Ernie is fourteen years old (and was featured as a pet of the week!!) and to say that he is set in his ways is an understatement. He likes to sleep on the couch during certain times of the day, and don’t you bother him unless you want to hear about it for the next three days. He is also extremely picky about his food bowl. If he can see even a slight empty spot, he will cry loudly until we either shake the bowl and cover the hole or put more food in there.

However, that is not the strangest thing about my cat. The strangest thing is that not only does he chow down on the cat food we give him, but he can often be seen at the dog’s dish, munching away on the dry dog food as well. If the dog’s dish is empty, it will trigger another long, loud, mournful cry of starvation from Ernie, even if his own food bowl is completely full and he has been offered snacks.

I don’t know what it is, to be honest. His food is more colorful, looks and smells better than the dog food, yet there he is day after day, giving the dog a heart attack because his food is being eaten.

Just for the record, the only thing other than cat food (and the occasional kitty treat) Ernie will even consider eating is a few licks of cream cheese from a finger tip, or licking a little salt off a pretzel. Other than that, he’s strictly dry food only, and will turn his nose up at everything else, including tuna fish.

Weird pets! Gotta love em.
